Tampa Man Gets Life In Jail For Fatal Carjacking

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- A Tampa man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for fatally shooting a man during a carjacking at the 2005 Black College Reunion.

Herbert Manago, 18, was sentenced by Circuit Judge Julianne Piggotte on Tuesday. Manago was convicted of first-degree murder for the April 15, 2005, killing of Donell King, 20.

Before being sentenced, Manago read a poem he wrote.

"Look into my eyes, and tell me what you see. Is it life? Is it death? Is it freedom? Is it captivity?" he said.

His lawyer, William Hathaway, argued that his client should receive a lighter sentence because of his age.

King was on a double date with his twin brother when armed men ordered the couples to give up their bright blue Ford souped-up sedan, investigators said.

Police Kill Man Wanted For Bank Robbery In Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. -- A man wanted on charges he robbed a bank wearing a football helmet and gardening gloves was fatally shot after police tracked him to an apartment and he pulled a weapon on the officers, authorities said.

James Jay Baldwin, 56, dropped a sack full of money while fleeing a Bank of America branch last week, and was nearly caught when the driver of a garbage truck blocked the path of the getaway car, police said. Baldwin got away, but an accomplice was arrested.

When police went to the apartment Wednesday night to arrest him, Baldwin struggled with them and was shot with a stun gun. Then he went into another room and pulled a weapon from a zippered bag, prompting one of the officers to fatally shoot him, police said.

Baldwin was sentenced in 1993 to a decade in prison for burglary, robbery, aggravated assault and impersonating a police officer, records show.
